In many African countries, rail-road scrap is offered for re-melting. Generally rail-road scrap would comprise of: Wagon cutting/bogie cuttings where a complete railway wagon is cut up into smaller pieces.
Railway lines – Though of high carbon content, are still wanted by certain specific steel manufacturing units.
Railway axles – If 100% damaged, they are suitable for commercial re-use.
Railway wheels – Whether cut into half or bought as full, they are also suitable for steel melting to certain specific user industries just like the railway lines.
DS Metals trades in large quantities of rail road scrap on an annual basis. Photographs of different grades are given below. Needless to mention that these are of premium grade scrap and the cargo mass will easily exceed 25 tons when loaded in a 20 feet container.
